Teacher Appreciation Days August to October

The Friends of Kent Library will be holding 

 TEACHER APPRECIATION DAYS in the Book Cellar of the Kent Public Library, 17 Sybil's Crossing, Kent Lakes on Saturdays, August 12, September 9,  and October 14 from 10am to 2:30pm, in conjunction with their Book Cellar Sales.  

On these days, teachers who show a teacher I.D. can fill a bag or bags with books for $2.00 each bag. 

Start your school year prepared!  Begin a classroom library, or stock up on books you can give to your students.  Don't forget to pick out a few books you'll enjoy as well.  

"Teachers give so much to our community" says Carol Donick, Library Director. "The Friends of the Library want to give something back to them."

Artist Statement:  Kelly Lynn Goodhart

I have been interested in photography since my Grandmother gave me a Vivitar film camera in 5^th grade.  It traveled everywhere with me and with it, I took pictures of everything & everyone.  It was my favorite possession and nothing used to excite me more than receiving my prints.

While days of ordering prints in the mail & taking pictures with my small film camera have long passed, my enjoyment of photography has not.  Sports & concerts were my favorite subjects as I longed to capture photos of people “famous” to me – until I started spending more time in nature.  

My husband Justin & I have been fortunate enough to travel nationally & internationally taking photos of our many adventures.  

One such adventure saw us attending a farm dinner a few years ago.  Seated at the gigantic table, I had the opportunity to sit next to a professional photographer who had published several books & declared that he was giving up on using his full camera gear & instead working solely with his iPhone.  I have to confess that as much as I like using my Nikon D7100, I love taking photos with my iPhone.

WATER IS LIFE

June 1 – June 30, 2017

Vivian Haberfeld, presents Water is Life at the Kent Public Library.

Deeply moved by the natural landscape and gentle beauty of the Mid-Hudson Valley, Vivian began a search for a way to get closer to nature. Through that highly personal and emotional process, she discovered the artist within herself. It is a sentimental journey that continues to motivate her work as a painter.

Vivian is influenced by the works of Master Impressionists, Van Gogh, Monet, and Turner. Her own work offers a unique style characterized by simplicity and bold use of color.  Inspired by the land, she uses it as a guide to unleash her imagination. 

Galleries:
Vivian has exhibited at the Look Art Gallery, solo exhibit at the Kent Public Library, solo exhibit at Somerfield’s Restaurant, and local non-profit Galleries: A. Eric Arctander Gallery at Putnam Arts Council, Friends of the Great Swamp, and Arts on the Lake.  She sells direct to buyers via word of mouth.  Her work is exhibited privately from New York to California.

Education:
Vivian holds a Bachelor of Science Degree, but didn't start to paint until after a 20 year career in advertising.  She started with classes at The Art Students League of New York, and The New School for Art and Design.  She continued her education in the Mid-Hudson Valley with classes at Arts on the Lake, The Putnam Arts Council, and Silvermine Art Center.

Artist Statement:
"A native of Long Island, and current resident of the Mid-Hudson Valley, I am moved by striking skies, distant vistas, and bold colors.  My intent is to create an idealized place for myself and my viewers. I don’t copy what I see.  I prefer to use reality for reference, and then let my imagination and brush dictate the outcome.  I am not afraid to explore and discover harmony in nature and life."

Justin P. Goodhart Photographs on Display at Kent Public Library

I first started exploring the world of night photography in 2014 and I was very quickly drawn in by the creative possibilities that it offers.  “CARPE NOCTEM” features some of my latest works in night photography and consists of exposures that range from a few seconds to over an hour in length.  Many of my night photographs aim to capture the sense of the passing of time in a still image, something that I find very fascinating.  While others aim to “see” what is not always obvious to the naked eye.  I enjoy using night photography to explore our relationship to the universe and the continuum of time, while also, I hope, creating beautiful and captivating images. 

I grew up in the Adirondacks and have been fascinated with photography since a very young age and owning my fist camera, a Mickey Mouse 110.  After moving to the Hudson Valley in 2009 I started taking photography more serious.  It was during an overnight workshop on Bannerman’s Island that my love of night photography was born.

John Supple Photographs on Display at Kent Public Library

I’ve been passionate about photography from an early age, bought my 1st camera at about 16 and started to learn as much as I could.  I always had a keen eye for hidden details and studied as many photographs as I could from the masters….

Worked (unpaid) in Dublin at a studio for about 2 years and then worked in Devon, England for a full year before selling all my possession to pay for a ticket to the USA…

It took a few years of hard work before I restarted photography and some years later I opened a studio in Houston, TX.  This was a great learning experience but my heart was not been fulfilled as I was getting burned out doing weddings, and boring old portraits. 

Closed the studio down and started to raise my 2 boys, 18 years later and I’m on a different track, tuned into a higher power and becoming clearer with my original intent, finding a new way of seeing and doing. Thanks to modern software, many people (such as myself) are realizing the ability to produce their visions that can come true with greater ease.

I intend to produce more work along the lines of questioning our existence, and more work tuned with old mythology and stories passed down from a bygone era.

My art reflects my love of life; people, nature, simple everyday things that inspire me to move.
Compositional elements are found everywhere in the world; patterns in nature, unique proportions of human
anatomy, the portrait, gestural movement of branches and trees, the breadth of atmospheric perspective and
layers of air in space,....
Countless reasons creativity helps facilitate growth; architecture, musical composition and poetry. To move,
dance, paint,and play. This is what inspires me to be an artist.

Masters of Fine Art from the New York Academy of Art in New York.
Studied classical and contemporary art training from the model.
Painted with the late Millet Andrejevic and Xavier de Callatay amongst other noted Professors.
Andrew Warhol was on the Board of Directors in the late 80’s and Eileen Guggenheim is currently involved with
the Art History Dept. at the Academy.
