Heidi Stein

This art comes from my series entitled "Ephemera Unleashed." It features parts of handwritten letters from 1951 about daily activities written by a woman whose fiancé is in the armed forces. Also included are printed papers that I made with a gel plate. My art uses recycled, found, and hand-painted materials that could be disposable. I enjoy collaging these bits of paper into acrylic paintings because it adds another layer of interest, color and texture. My art consists of small decisions and actions, an internal dialogue of experimentation and exploration, placing various papers in different locations to see where they fit. My art has become a way for me to elevate the mundane by memorializing ephemera. Making collages or printing paper with the gel plate is a frequent activity, like exercise, cooking and reading.

Exploring and experimenting with paint and paper creates an internal dialogue that helps me process things I don’t have words for yet. The minutiae of handwritten letters, art on paper, and daily activities can be forgettable or memorable, but I choose to use ephemera and share it through my art.

Heidi Stein is a local artist who has exhibited with the Putnam Arts Council and the Mahopac Public Library Gallery, the Field Gallery in Peekskill and the Hendrick Hudson Library in Montrose. She teaches classes in gel plate printing, card-making and mixed media art. Daily activities, like writing, cooking, making art and reading, are forgotten with the passage of time, but art transposes the ordinary into something extraordinary. Heidi believes that making art can be therapeutic and she invites you to join her at a gel printing exploration to experience making beautiful papers with paint.
