Caroline Zemira Douglas

These photos were taken in the fall of 2021, during which I conducted research on water quality in the Green River (Williamstown, MA), for a geomorphology class. There are quite a few things to be said about what the Green River has provided for me, but to put it simply: it has offered solitude when I need it, brought togetherness when I wanted it, and most of all, it has served as a physical reminder that multiple things can exist within one body. Whether it be the dramatic variation in water dynamics or the fact that I could pursue two of my strongest interests at the very same location and even in the same moment. It’s easier for me to see now that there’s no need to box in things that don’t need to be confined.  Instead, I try to lean into and celebrate the multidimensional nature of people and places — it brings new perspectives.

Caroline Zemira Douglas is a graduate of Williams College and a resident of Stormville, NY.  At Williams, she studied Geosciences and Studio Art, and has combined the two in various forms while exploring the overlap between visual art and science.  She works with a range of materials, and has experience with photography, drawing, painting, linocut, quilting, video, weaving, fresco, and more.
