September Exhibit at Kent Library...
The Friends are pleased to announce an exciting exhibit for the month of September, A Cabinet of Curiosities, by Rena Marie.
A Cabinet of Curiosities comes to the Kent Library in a wondrous collection of natural items: skulls and bones, mammals and moths, and plants and critters assembled or refigured by Patterson artist and naturalist, Rena Marie.
Also known as "wonder-rooms", these cabinets of curiosities first appeared in the 17th century. They were the precursor to nature museums and encyclopedic in their artifacts. Rena Marie's cabinet is filled with mammal skeletons that instruct, or chicken bone chairs that delight. A casual glance inside this cabinet door and the curious are swept to discovery after discovery. Included in the exhibit are rare field books and nature study guides that led to today's conservation movement in America.
Rena's natural art, whether paintings, collages, or constructions have been exhibited widely. She is known for her scavenged art, both beautiful and horrible, and her studies in Nature's Laboratory.
The exhibit opens September 1st and runs through the end of the month as part of Art at the Kent Library. It is sponsored by the Friends of Kent Library who support programs and equipment for the library.
We hope to see you there!

The Giant Book Sale is Back!!
If you’re a book collector, an avid reader, or just hungry for a good deal, then don’t miss the Friends of the Kent Public Library Giant Book Sale on Memorial Day Weekend. A favorite of book enthusiasts and collectors, the annual event will take place at the Kent Town Hall (adjacent to the library) in the Kent Town Center off Route 52. Sale hours are from 9 am to 5 pm on Saturday, May 26th and 11 am to 4 pm on Sunday, May 27th. Admission is free, and guests are encouraged to come early in order to take advantage of the best selection of books. For a $10.00 admission fee, guests may attend an "early bird" preview on Saturday morning from 8:30 am to 9:00 am. Friends of the Kent Library are invited to attend this preview free of charge.
You'll find literally thousands of hardcover and paperback books in virtually every genre, as well as tables full of books just for children and teens. In addition to books on a wide variety of subjects ranging from mystery, romance, and general fiction to cookbooks, crafts, history, and sports, the sale will include CDs and DVDS. New this year, the sale will feature a CD/DVD cleaning service which will be available to visitors for a moderate fee of $1.00 per disc. There will also be raffles for a variety of hand-crafted gift baskets. A newly-designed "Friends of the Kent Public Library" canvas tote bag will be on sale for a cost of $10 per bag. For an additional $5.00 donation, shoppers can stuff their bag with books (excluding specially priced items).
As always, in the "special room" at the sale, there will be hundreds of collectible and coffee table books at a fraction of their retail price. The selection in this "collector's corner" will include books on a variety of subjects (art, photography, history, travel, etc.) and a large number of first editions and signed copies.
The Friends offer reasonable prices: hardcovers are $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00; oversize paperbacks are $1.00 each; and most children's/teens books are sold for $1.00 or less. The already-low prices will be slashed on Sunday afternoon (between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm), when you can stuff a bag for $3.00 (excluding specially priced books).
The Friends book sale is the biggest fund-raiser of the year for the Library. Proceeds from the event go toward the purchase of library equipment and materials, and help fund special Library programs. In addition to hosting a number of smaller book sales throughout the year, the Friends volunteers also staff the Book Nook at the Library. The Book Nook is open on Wednesdays from 10 am to 6 pm and Saturdays from 10 am to 2:30 pm. Books are also available for purchase during all regular library hours from the pedestal rack in the library's main lobby.

Friends September Art Exhibit

Alice in Wonderland in Books comes to the Kent Library with character dolls by Gladys Boalt, and hand colored and hand-screened drawings on fabric by Richard Harrison and hand and machine sewed by Kathleen Harrison, in addition to the antique books that inspired these local artists.
The Queen of Hearts, the White Rabbit, the Jabberwocky, the Madhatter, and of course Alice herself are among those represented in drawings and soft sculpture.
Nationally known for her Christmas Ornaments, Stormville resident Gladys Boalt's creations can be found in the White House and museums. Her miniatures are lifelike and accurate. Long time Carmel School District art teacher and Kent resident Richard Harrison's art work on fabric document a 30 year fascination with Alice and her adventures. His art work can be found in many collections worldwide.
Both artists have collected volumes about Alice, her creator Lewis Carroll, and her illustrators. The books and other memorabilia will be on display.
The exhibit opens September 1st and runs through the end of the month, and is sponsored by The Friends of Kent Library who support programs and equipment for the library.
The Kent Library is located on Route 52 in Kent.

Giant Book Sale Success!

Well between us all we did it again!
The Annual Giant Book Sale was a giant success! The Friends made nearly $6,000. We could not have done this without the help of our members, volunteers and our community who supported the sale.
Our book sales make it possible to help the Library with so many of their requests. This year we donated $5,000 for a new 60" TV for the program
room, money for a museum freebie for library patrons and for many other programs.
They are all available to you, so please take advantage of them.
We will be having several mini-book sales throughout the Fall so please
click on to our website to be informed about these.

BOOK NOOK ROOM
Remember we have our well stocked Book Nook Room in the rear of the library open two days a week all year....great titles and inexpensive prices so take advantage of these great buys. The Nook is open Wednesday 10 AM- 6:30 PM and Saturdays 10: AM 'til 2:30 PM.

March Art Exhibit at Kent Library...
"Photo Visions" by Margaret Waage
A mixture of landscape and abstract photo illustrations make up the display. Working as a photojournalist, Waage produces feature "daytrip" assignments for the Republican-American newspaper and reports local news for the Southington Patch site.
Artist Statement:
"Visual storytelling helps me to recognize and understand the relationship I have to things, places, and most importantly people. It is looking through the lens that I see what seems apparent and on closer inspection, something more. A blossom is like poetry brief but everlasting. Photography is the tool I use to focus on what I describe as true wealth, that is of being in the moment.
Abstract work is made by finding a momentum within the space of a frame. Working with a photograph as the entry point, the image is edited using color and graphic patterns. The end results are 'abstract formulations.' It is up to the viewer to interpret the subject matter."

July 1-31, 2010
Within every soul is a deep connection to nature and its magic. Sometimes that connection flows very strongly, other times it is a quiet, almost whimsical whisper, but it is always there for LisaMarie. Just as the Native Americans believed that certain animals, or totems, represented an individual's inner nature or guardian spirit, her work is inspired by an intrinsic awareness that our connection to the world around us (its life forms, ancient legends, cultures and energy) is a very tangible thread. LisaMarie's images evoke a playful representation of that bond and attempt to inspire the viewer's imagination.
