ARTIST STATEMENT BARBARA LEMISCHAK
Although I have been painting with acrylic and watercolor paints for years, it wasn’t until I retired that I began taking classes offered by the local libraries and community art centers. These classes not only expanded my understanding of the different mediums but valuable information and techniques were shared by these experienced teachers.

Several years ago I participated in a “Soul Painting class using
watercolor inks for the first time. The instructor, Jeanette Rodriguez,
was also teaching alcohol ink classes for which I immediately
registered. This was really a turning point in my life as I was captured
by the unique freedom I found using these inks. As a result I let go of
the rigid self judgement finding more self acceptance and the courage
to enter several of my paintings in art exhibitions in the area.
Art has become a fluid avenue for creative expression for me. I rarely
have an image or specific idea but am open to what may emerge from my
subconscious mind as I paint. Sometimes images representing inner fears,
anger or sadness evolve. Most often painting is playing, enjoying the
creative process and being surprised.
